passports and travel documents

Traveling with kids can be among the most fun experiences families can enjoy together. But, there are many other things you have to consider when you travel with kids – like their travel documents. Preparation is key to having a successful family vacation. Therefore, I’d like to describe why its so important to prepare your kid’s travel documents. The first time I wanted to travel internationally with my kids, I didn’t know where to start. I asked several friends, and I did a lot of online research. Here is what I have learned:

Every child (including infants) needs his/her own passport for foreign travel. A passport is mandatory. A passport is not just a piece of identification – it serves as proof that you are a citizen of another country. You should understand the application process and documentation requirements prior to submitting the application. The sooner you submit your application the better — obtaining a passport can take 1 to 2 months.

In addition to a passport, a travel authorization may be needed for minors who are traveling abroad unaccompanied by both of their parents. For example, if you plan on traveling with your minor child and only one parent will accompany him/her, you should have a notarized letter of consent. This type of letter demonstrates that the absent parent knows about the travel plans and gives permission for his/her child to travel. This can reduce confusion when you arrive at the airport or border crossing.

When considering international destinations, be aware that a visa may be required for entry into a particular country. Check with the official government agency responsible for issuing visas and/or a travel agent to determine if a visa is required for your destination. Once you’ve identified whether or not a visa is required for your destination, research and identify the proper procedures for obtaining the visa.

When packing for your trip, remember to think about protecting your child’s travel documents. Protecting your child’s documents, while providing easy access to them, is very important. Use a travel wallet or money belt to carry your child’s passport and other important documents. These types of wallets allow for quick access to the documents you need while keeping them protected.

An additional resourceful option is to create photocopies of your child’s passport and other vital documents. If your child loses or has his/her documents stolen during the trip, having these photocopies available will greatly simplify replacing the lost documents. You can store the photocopies separately from the original documents or digitally on your phone or in cloud storage.

Overall, being prepared with all of the appropriate travel documents for your kids is not simply about complying with the law — it is about creating a worry-free and memorable experience for your family. By investing the time to acquire and organize these important documents, you’ll be able to focus on enjoying the memories created during your trip rather than dealing with administrative hassles. Before embarking on your next adventure, confirm that you have all of the necessary documents.

Preparing travel documents for children is extremely important for any family planning a trip. As you plan for your family vacation, each child must possess his/her own passport for international travel. This includes newborns! Not only is a child’s passport a necessity, it provides security to the child during the trip. I hope you create some wonderful family trips!
